Benefits of Stock Options
You may have already heard of what stock options are and how they work. May be you are interested in trying out stock options yourself, yet you still have misgivings in risking that much earned money. To further help you in your decision, I enumerated some of the reasons why people try out stock options.
To recap, stock options is a kind of contract that gives its holders the right but not necessarily the obligation to buy or sell stocks at an agreed stock price for a given period of time. To exercise this stock option a strike price is usually set by the stock market. There are two kinds of options: calls and puts. Call is an option that gives its holder the choice to buy stocks at an agreed price, within the agreed time. Put is an option that gives its holder the choice to sell stocks at an agreed price within a specified time. A premium is the money paid by the holder to acquire the option.
Speculation and Hedging
There are generally two reasons why people use stock options. They are because of speculation and hedging. You might have guessed what speculation is. Speculation is like gambling your money and hoping that things turn out the way you want them. Options, like any stocks, involve speculating how the price of stocks would behave. This guessing game involves not only speculating about the increase or decrease of the share price but also by how much this increase or this decrease is. One would also have to speculate on when and for how long this stock price change is. Speculation is one of the reasons why options are considered risky as there are a lot of factors that may not go your way. But speculation has also been considered as one of the benefits in stock options as big profits may be earned when your speculations turn out to be correct. In effect, you buy stock options to have the opportunity to guess. And if your guess is correct you may earn big money from it.
Another reason to choose stock options is hedging. In hedging you are insured that you still have the opportunity to profit and the opportunity not to lose too much if ever what you expect did not happen. Stock options serve as a security for you, regardless of the actual stock market behavior.
Employee Stock Option
Other than speculative value and hedging, a stock option is also a good investment for companies especially if it involves an employee stock option. Employee stock options operate in the same way as our traditional stock options do. They provide the employee with the choice of buying stocks from the company at an agreed price. Employee stock options are often used by corporations to attract and to keep more employees that would work for them. This is especially true for attracting employees in the higher managerial and executive positions.
Trying out stock options may not be for everyone. It involves risking a little of your money for the possibility of earning much profit. But regardless of your decision to use stock options, at least you now why stock options have been a popular choice for some.
